Arnold Palmer
1961 British Open
|
|
|
Arnold Palmer grew up in
Latrobe, Pa. The son of a
professional golfer, he won three regional titles in his youth.
Turning professional after winning the 1954 U.S. amateur
championship, he won the 1955 Canadian Open. Palmer won the
Masters tournament in 1958, 1960, 1962, and 1964, becoming the
first four-time winner; the U.S. Open in 1960; and the British
Open in 1961 and 1962. A great fan favorite, followed
enthusiastically by “Arnie's Army,” he had a noted long-term
rivalry with Jack Nicklaus. In 1967 he became the first golf
professional to have won over $1 million. Palmer's charisma was a
major factor in establishing golf as a compelling television event
in the 1950s and 1960s, setting the stage for the popularity it
enjoys today. He is also credited by many for securing the status
of The Open Championship (British Open) among US players. Before
Palmer, relatively few American professionals attempted to play
The Open due to its travel requirements, foreign environment, and
the style of its courses. Palmer's successive Open wins in the
early 1960s convinced many American pros that a trip to Britain
would be worth the effort.
